Kicking off a week-long course on the philosophy of Objectivism, William R Thomas discusses pride as "the first and last of the virtues." Pride connects directly with the radical egoism of Ayn Rand’s Objectivist ethics. And it sums up her ethics, too, because pride is a commitment to moral excellence. In what sense is a proud person “arrogant”? Is pride competitive? We will also look at why self-esteem requires competence and moral rectitude.
