North Star: Self-Directed Learning for Teens is a 20 years standing community-based, independent learning program for high school age students not enrolled in school. Its model has been replicated over eight times, spurring an international network which calls itself the Liberated Learners.

Ken Danford

Co-Founder, North Star
Co-founder of North Star, Ken has been working intensively with teenagers and their families since 1991. Previously a middle school social studies teacher, first in Prince George’s County, MD, then in Amherst, MA, Ken left the Amherst school system to found North Star. He brought with him extensive education and training, including a B.A. from Amherst College in Psychology and an M.A.T. in Social Studies from Brown University.

Jon Trossbach

Math Teacher, Liberated Learners
Jon wishes a Liberated Learners center had been available to him during his teen years. Now he is a math teacher at LightHouse Holyoke, the first inner-city Liberated Learners center. He was an intern with North Star last year. Jon believes the North Star model has the ability to cultivate young learners a life-long love of learning and he hopes it can be accessible for every teen.
