Mattheus von Guttenberg is an economist and libertarian activist. His areas of interest include Austrian economics, agorism, and crypto-anarchism. His activism is focused on delegitimizing the State by writing, public speaking, and building alternative social institutions. Mattheus opposes voting, running for office, and other forms of "in-the-system" activism as these actions sanction the concept of electoral politics.

His freedom movement involvements have included discussion groups, challenging tax laws, suing public officials, and recalling a mayor from office, helping to create the New Libertarian (agorism) movement.
