Objectivist Virtues: Pride
Sponsored by The Atlas Society.

Kicking off a week-long course on the philosophy of Objectivism, William R Thomas discusses pride as "the first and last of the virtues." Pride connects directly with the radical egoism of Ayn Rand’s Objectivist ethics. And it sums up her ethics, too, because pride is a commitment to moral excellence. In what sense is a proud person “arrogant”? Is pride competitive? We will also look at why self-esteem requires competence and moral rectitude.

Ayn Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism, is often misrepresented in the media. Was Ayn Rand for dog-eat-dog selfishness? Is Objectivism elitist? Is it a childish pseudo-philosophy? Was Ayn Rand in favor of genocide and serial killers? William R Thomas will correct these errors and more.

Trusting Young People: Lessons Learned from a Coercion-Free Summer Camp
James will talk about his experiences in bringing 60-125 young people together in unschooling environments at summer camp. While many people from conventional educational paradigms shudder at the idea of 100+ kids who can do whatever they want, James' stories from running summer camp in such a very different picture from what many suspect would happen. Young people from both schooled and unschooled environments come together and magic happens: they regulate themselves, treat each other with kindness, and learn to become their best selves in an environment that trusts that they know what is best for them.

James will share how young people go through a rapid de-schooling process, form authentic relationships, and pursue new challenges without a single ounce of judgment from the adults around them. He'll also talk about particular strategies that any family can employ to provide their children with rich life experiences in the absence of coercion.

From Free Will To Civil Liberty
Many philosophers argue whether humans possess something mysterious called "free will" as an attribute to our relationship to a mystical entity above us or an absolute reality below us. I will argue that the debate is based on absurd premises: as for metaphysics, the only free will that matters is epistemic freedom, i.e. the necessary ignorance in which we are of ourselves and each other. And the proper way to adapt to this ignorance is to build rules that respect the mutual autonomy of individuals, i.e. property rights. Freedom is not a relationship we have to God, but to each other.

Freedom From Sexuality: Human Asexuality
In high school biology we learned that mosses are asexual. Did you know that some people are asexual too? Asexuality is the absence of innate desire for partnered sex during some or all of a person's life. With the help of a sex therapist I recently came to identify as asexual. I will share what I have learned about human asexuality, answer any questions I can, and provide a space for discussion of the topic. Fun facts: Studies indicate 1% of the adult population is asexual. That's 2.7 million asexuals in the United States and 54 million worldwide.

“Never forgotten are our heroes, for they are us and we are them.”

All over the world, there are countless heroes of liberty who are suffering for their sacrifice. Some are exiled or imprisoned, others even worse. Ross and Eric come to mind, but there are many, many others.

This workshop is to bring us together and advocate for those who feel they have been silenced. If we each write just one letter each, a flicker of light can be seen in the darkest of cells. The results of this workshop will be priceless and will be talked about and remembered by someone for the rest of their lives.

Contributions of the following will be welcomed:
1. Supplies: Pencils, paper, envelopes, stamps
2. Bio submissions of people imprisoned, including address information

How the Free State Project Empowers Communities
Despite thousands of years of technological advancements, people still struggle with communication and implementing successful societal structures. What has worked for humans and has withheld the tests of time is the power of strong communities.

Because the Free State Project emphasizes the importance of sharing and collaboration, this has fostered an atmosphere of positivity and effectiveness. Not many liberty lovers can brag about changing their city’s laws for the better and making a positive impact through volunteering and charity, but a good number of Free Staters can.

I will go over why, socially and evolutionary, humans have worked better together in communities, and use real-life examples of how individuals of the FSP have showed these reasons in action.

Ethics at Work: Profits as Morally Right
Sponsored by The Atlas Society.

Drawing on his new book, Ethics at Work, William R Thomas will argue that the old adage, “Do well by doing good,” gets the issue completely backwards. Envision productive success in life and dealing with others by trade as lying at the core of what a good life would be. Think of business as an essentially noble calling, not a dirty, amoral sideline to ethics.

The Economics of Eco-Laptops (guaranteeing personal and local economic security)
Current mass-produced laptops are designed as efficiently as possible, which is an extremely environmentally responsible thing to do. However: they are also designed with built-in obsolescence, which most certainly is not. The efficiency with which they are made and assembled means that their individual parts cannot be reused, and economically-effective repair is just as impractical. Add to that the fact that the typical OS is ripe for virus-pickings, and chances are extremely high that any given perfectly functioning laptop is extremely likely to end up in landfill in under two years.

We also have some serious concerns over privacy and personal security, which, thanks to Snowden's revelations, has clearly now moved out of the previously murky and uncertain realm of "speculation" or even "paranoia". But this lack of security - the lack of control and rights we have over our own hardware that we paid for - is actually *built-in* to every Intel processor manufactured since 2009.

This talk therefore describes how designing computers with "Computer Cards" - similar to "Memory Cards" but a fully-functioning computer - can not only improve personal security, but saves people money long-term, stimulates local economies, and many many more benefits at the personal, local, national, and international economic levels.

Free Yourself From Burnout
Burnout is a stress phenomenon triggered by prolonged pressures of work and everyday life that exceed the individual’s ability to cope. The high expectations that surround us in every area of our lives often make us feel overloaded, useless, and underappreciated. If these feelings are taking over your life, then you may be heading into burnout.

Burnout can be an enormous roadblock to your happiness and wellbeing. It’s important to recognize the symptoms and effects that it may have on your life and take the necessary steps to release and eliminate it altogether.

DIY Nut Milk
Way back in the Middle Ages, humans were making milk out of all sorts of nuts, seeds, and grains. Somehow over the years, this art has gone out of favor. Now almost everyone assumes that "milk" is that white stuff you get from a cow. Most of us don't even think about the white stuff you get from non-animal sources.

There's been somewhat of a resurgence though. Now you see almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, and other kinds of plant-based milks for sale commercially. That's been great for people who are allergic to cow's milk, or for people you can't digest it, or for those who have chosen a vegan lifestyle.

But those commercial products aren't all they're cracked up to be. They have sugars and other additives that you probably don't really want. If you make your own, YOU control what goes into your milk. It costs less, too, and it's really not that hard to do.

Stupid Things Libertarians / Anarchists Say and Believe
How do some anarchists undermine the arguments for liberty in making their strong statements against the state--of which, if taken to their logical conclusion, also undermine the case for a free market?

Some examples include: "The State doesn't exist"; "We should not engage in libertarian infighting"; "Concepts don't exist"; as well as other nonsensical statements.

Daniel is a dualist. He thinks the materialist strain that has infected libertarian thought reeks of scientism and undermines the arguments for liberty. His discussion aims to explore this realm of thought and discussion.

Applying Permaculture Principles to Portable 3D Printer Design (how to learn how to make a portable, compact 3D printer from zero knowledge in a hurry)
Building 3D printers is becoming straightforward, with kits that come with instructions and an Internet forum for people to ask others for advice. Designing 3D printers is becoming easier, with off-the-shelf assemblies becoming commonplace on stores like OpenBuilds. Designing portable 3D printers is not so easy: hinges have to be arranged, and parts have to slot or lock together. Designing compact 3D printers is particularly challenging: space becomes a premium, areas which were previously independent can overlap if care is not taken, and parts could hit each other during travel.

Designing fast 3D printers that have travel speeds of up to 1,000 mm/sec and that can extrude filament at 90 cubic millimetres per second is already right on the edge of current community research and experimentation, and to consider designing an entirely new 3D printer only 10 weeks before getting on an international airplane flight (with the printer in a suitcase) brings its own set of interesting challenges. So to even contemplate building a folding, compact, portable, fast and accurate 3D printer that has to survive international transportation - in under 10 weeks is - to be absolutely frank, just completely bonkers.

This talk will therefore bring the good, the bad, and the ugly to the table, including an explanation of some counter-intuitive but elegant mechanical design aspects as well as explaining how and why permaculture principles were applied to solve real engineering problems. An answer to the question, "Why does this 3D printer have a rubber bath mat and 18in carpet tiles on its BOM" will be revealed. URL: http://reprap.org/wiki/Sandwich200

Saving Capitalism from the “Capitalists”: A Discussion on the Future of Free Markets
Sponsored by the Charles Koch Institute.

Americans have seen Washington come to the rescue of the wealthy and well-connected time and again. Subsidies, tax loopholes, regulatory privileges, and "protections" have spawned outrage from individuals across the political spectrum, and gave rise to both the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements.

At every level of government, politically-connected insiders have been given special favors, leaving both consumers and the future of free-markets in jeopardy. But where do the greatest threats to capitalism come from? How did we get to our current situation, and what can be done about it?

Join Elliot Fox (Outreach Coordinator, Charles Koch Institute) in a lively and interactive conversation with Christopher Koopman (Research Fellow, Mercatus Center at George Mason University) to answer these and other questions.

How to Change Education
Schools are a bad idea. Their main purpose is day care. Their secret purpose is keeping kids in line so they will follow rules and become obedient citizens. If you really want to educate your kids you need to be make sure that no one is talking at them, that they can follow their own interests, that someone is there to help when they fail, and that they are learning by doing. The government has no interest in doing that, so you may have to do it yourself. I will be speaking about what is needed to educate children‪, and specific ways in which we can make it happen inside and outside of schools‪.

Social Change Strategy Pluralism
Sponsored by Students for Liberty.

Hayek's structure of production and his article "Intellectuals and Socialism" have inspired many libertarians in their efforts to model social change, particularly regarding the path by which ideas influence public policy.

Application of this model to social change theory has come under scrutiny by others who prefer to view technological advancement that undermines government regulation as more effective than policy change.

I will explore arguments for and against both of these perspectives and the implications for how you should view your own contribution to the advancement of a free society.

Porky Motorcycles on Mt. Washington
I hereby invite any porcupines who can ride a motercycle to join me. This ride will be an easy one. It is only about 30 miles to the base of the mountain. The ride will be going West on Rte 2 for about 20 miles, then South on Rte 16 for about 10 miles. The auto road up the mountain will require toll (about $8). It is mostly paved, but there is a well maintained hard packed gravel section near the top. Views are spectacular. We will make a longish rest stop at the top. How long may depend on the weather. It is always a lot colder at the top (around 5000 ft), so having a winter jacket is advised. This ride is scheduled for 12:30 PM Friday June 24, meeting at the Pavilion near the campfire, at Rogers Campground in Lancaster, NH. There will be a short riders' meeting first, with departure at about 12:45. We should make it back by around 3:30 or 4. There is a bulletin board at the pavilion so any updates will be posted there. Last year there was a group of us that rode the ATV trails around Berlin. If there is interest, we can organize a second trip that includes some off-road this year also. RSVP to the Mt. Washington ride is appreciated but not required. Please express your interest in an off-road ride if you have any. Berlin, as you may know, was a paper mill town with a dying industry. It is now promoting tourism by relaxing ATV laws and developing a trail system. ATVs are welcome on the streets and in the downtown area. If the group is large we will have a “sag wagon”. There is no charge for this event other than the toll for the auto road. Questions can be directed to me at charles.h.hampe@gmail.com.

Touch Rugby (no experience needed)
Are you a Porcupine that is playing rugby, has played, or wants to learn? Time to dust off your boots and come out to the pitch. Since many of us old ruggers don't play anymore and are no longer used to the brutality of the game, we are going to just play touch 7's. That means we are just tagging each other not tackling, basically we are playing "Booger." Even if you don't want to play, come out, pass a ball around, and drink a pint. New players with no experience welcome, male and female ruggers encouraged to come. No age limit is required but you must be large enough to keep up with adults.

They will bring marshmallows and facilitate friendly discussion around the "flames of liberty."

Pebble Meditation
Pebble meditation is a simple guided meditation that was developed for children but is enjoyable for everyone. Using four stones, we will focus on one at a time and think of being fresh as a flower, solid as a mountain, clear as water, and spacious and free. Freedom Isn’t Obvious: Varieties of Liberty and the Law
Sponsored by The Atlas Society.

Are liberty and the implications of individual rights obvious, self-evident facts? William R Thomas will survey a variety of key issues on which many advocates of freedom don’t agree now, including libel, abortion, intellectual property, and the size of or need for government. This diversity of interpretation presents the legal system of any free society with a serious challenge to consistency. And it raises the specter of libertarian-on-libertarian warfare.
